Old games are much like old music, they are often simply better than their newer counterparts. When making games was about making games and not about production efficiency, profit margins, and marketing

ye ppl used to make games just because rite?

Back then games were sold on their merits, not on bribed reviewers, advertising budgets, or because they were attached to the latest pixar film. These days a game does not need to be good to sell well, and this is the whole problem with modern video gaming

m8 it does sell well tho otherwise why would they bother

yeah sorry shiroi your romantic view of game development hasnt been true since 1992 outside a few simple indie games. nobody is going to give you 100-500 mil and not care if you make a profit. The big problem with modern development is the cost of developing AAA titles pushing up risks very very high which means that its impossible to make an innovative, high polished and content rich AAA game because by definition innovation is risky. Now if faggots stopped pirating so much maybe AAA title prices would go down a bit or at least profits up so more than 1/3 of developed high budget games actually made a profit but I have no idea... but the fact is customers pay the same amount now roughly as they did for a game back in 2002 and costs and team sizes have gone up 10x, but tools/development efficiency hasnt really improved much since then.

of course they would. people have lots of money and people want to play games. Its like saying people wouldnt drink beer unless it was free. dumbest argument of all time.

Why do you think console releases are more important, even for traditional PC developers like Id. its because the number of pirates on that platform is really small so you make a lot more moneyz for your spent effort.

saying baw-wah I dont want to pay 50 dollah is dumb also, just wait for bargain bin in that case? supply and demand sort of breaks down when some of the demandees steal the product anyway.

are you really asserting that one download of a game = one lost sale

Maybe not directly but the overall culture could lead to a decrease in sales. I think the console vs pc argument has some weight to it. That is, console games in general sell better partly because they're harder to copy.

I think there could be many reasons why pc sales aren't as good but I haven't got much doubt that many people would buy the game if it weren't so easy to download. (Many wouldn't buy it but the point still stands that a lot would have, like console games, so in that sense a certain percentage of the market, of the demand, is directly lost.) I know for me when it comes to console games I don't really think to pirate where as pc games it always crosses my mind because of the ease that it can be done.

It's not stealing. But it seems to decrease the relevant (those who pay) demand.

Console pirating is as rampant as PC gaming. You just dont have the stats on it as readily available because how cant track pirated copies of console games as easily as torrents/p2p. Metric tons are sold daily in Mexico, Russia, Brazil and China, ranging from 2 dollars to 10 dollars a pop.

Piracy is market driven, denial of it is retarded. Noticed how there's no much talk about App piracy even though now the userbase is growing like crazy? There's more people using Ipad/Ipod Ios than linux users.

Apps are cheap. Coincidence?

As long as companies want to charge premium prices to get massive profit at the expense of the customer, there will be piracy, and god bless :maverick:

Just going by all my friends I definitely couldn't say console pirating is even near as rampant, maybe in mexico, definitely not in Civilised countries, or rather at least Australia. Not even close.

Yeah because Australia is really relevant about this. Or anything at all.
